Question: Thoughts on External Hard Drives? Western Digital MyBook Essential?
I have a Western Digital 1 TB external hard drive which I bought yesterday and I am wondering what the deal is? It seems like it’s just a backup device instead of a “zip-drive” like hard drive that I can actually manage files myself on and can access through my computer. This specific model doesn’t let me view any of my files it backs up but will put them back on my computer if I lose something. I want an external hard drive that allows me to view and use the files it stores just like a flash drive would but also would protect my files on something other than my computer. Any ideas or recommendations? Thanks

Delete the Western Digital software off the drive by doing a format. Then set it up whatever way that you want.
Question: Why is my Western Digital external hard drive read only when I use a Mac?
I bought a 500 GB external hard drive “my passport” at Best Buy and the customer service employee said it would work with Windows and Mac. I use Windows Vista on my laptop at home but I am a Visual Communications student so we use Mac Pro’s at school. I can read and write at home but when I try on a Mac my sharing & permissions says “You can only read.”
Is there a way to change this without formatting for Mac since I need to be able to use it on a PC?
To the answerer of “Your external hard drive is formatted as NTFS. Mac OS X can read NTFS out of the box, but it cannot write to it. You will need to format the external hard drive as FAT32, so that both Mac OS X and Windows can read from it and write to it.”
How do I do that? Thank you so much, by the way!
