Question: I have this Desktop Hard drive but i have a Mac laptop, Will it work?
I have an iomega prestige desktop hard drive with 1 tb of memory. I was wondering if i could treat this hard drive like a portable hard drive. Not as in bring it every where with me, but connect it to my laptop and put some files in and disconnect it. will it work that way, or can it work that way?

Answer:

possibly, but if you don’t have a lot of experience in it, let a more experienced hardware guy do it.

edit: sorry, i don’t think it will work if you are using a MAC because apple doesnt really like people use non-apple authorized hardware.

Project File / Free .aif Download: adf.ly Finally figured out how to share the project file! Apparently I had to make it a .zip to share over my online backup, but you can now download the Garageband project file and/or a free download of the song (may require iTunes, idk much about .aif files).

Question: What is the best way to make a backup image of my Vista hard drive on my laptop?
I use Bart PE and DriveImage XML on my Windows XP machine and it works flawlessly. But Bart PE doesn’t work on Windows Vista. There is a deal called Vista PE that is suppose to work with DriveImage XML, but it seems like not too many people have perfected the system for Vista PE. It seems like too many errors, or too much junk info on the web, plus I’m no good with using WAIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit).

1) I have an external hard drive (500gb)
2) I also have a copy of my hard drive using DriveImage XML on it
3) I just don’t have a way to boot in case of my main hard drive fails to be able to restore a “new drive” using the DriveImage XML backup.

So my question is this. What other ways are possible to make a complete image backup of my Vista operating system, with the ability to boot from a CD (or floppy etc…), and restore a “new hard drive” in case my current hard drive fails completely?

Looking for free alternatives. I know there has got to be some free alternatives.

Question: Can I put my laptop hard drive in my pc and boot from it?
My laptop recently died because of a motherboard hardware issue……. it’s too much to fix, but my hard drive is 100% ok and I was wondering if at all possible to plug my laptop hard drive into my desktop and boot from it, could I run it like a Virtual pc or is there an easy way to make all the drivers work? My laptop was running windows 7 pro and the desktop is running windows 7 home, both made by HP.

**I do NOT want the answer “hook it up like an external hard drive” THAT IS NOT WHAT I AM ASKING and I already know I can do that**

Answer by John C
It will not boot, because it is expecting different hardware that what it will encounter when it tries to boot. Your best bet is to do a repair install of the OS once you have it installed!

Question: Can I use a 3.5-inch external hard drive with a laptop which has a 2.5-inch hard drive?
I am shopping for an external hard drive. I have a laptop, the Dell Inspiron 5150, which remains on my desk constantly; I never take it anywhere. I might as well have a desktop. Since I don’t need the external drive to be portable, I don’t want to pay for portability and prefer to pay for storage and speed. I want an external drive that’s described as ideally suited for use with a desktop computer, on the assumption that desktops are generally faster and more powerful than laptops and that their external drives would accordingly be faster and more powerful as well.

First, I want to confirm that the drive will work with my laptop. It’s the size of the drive that concerns me. According to a reviewer at CNET, “There are desktop external hard drives based on the 3.5-inch internal hard drives and laptop (or portable) external hard drives that are based on the 2.5-inch internal hard drives.”

Question: Can I use an external drive that is 3.5-inch even though my laptop’s drive is 2.5-inch? Does the extra inch mean simply that 3.5-inch has more storage space or that it uses a different format?

You’re reading the article wrong. They’re only talking about the SIZE of the drive, not where it can be used. There’s no reason any computer can’t use a drive of any physical size as long as you can plug it in.

Question: How do I transfer applications from external hard drive to hard drive in laptop?
Okay. So I had a laptop about a year ago that crashed. I recently bought blacx sata hdd USB Docking Station. I removed the hard drive and placed it in the docking station. Everything is up fine. I can transfer files. However when I tried to put some applications into the Programs file (ones that I don’t have the disk for anymore). Then tried to open them I get an error message. Is there a different way I can move applications into my new laptop through the “external hard drive”?

Answer:

Answer by mich436
The error message is probably because the applications do not have their settings in the registry and unfortunatly the only way to fix this problem is to find out what registry keys the program needs and manually create them or run the installer for the program.

Question: How do I connect another laptop to my Dell to access the hard drive without setting up a network?
Like how on a Mac you would hold down “T” when turning it on to turn it into an “external hard drive.”

Answer:

Answer by ladeehwk
There are several ways to connect a laptop to a PC.

1) if you have an Ethernet card installed on your laptop and on your PC you can directly connect them with a cross-over LAN cable (in case You don’t have network hub). or a straight LAN cable (if you are using a network hub or network switch between the computers)

2) via infrared (laptop and PC must have infraed)

3) Direct cable connect from parallel port to parellal port (help available in windows).

4) using a Null modem cable from one serial port to the other.

5) You can also connect modem to modem. but this method is bit difficult.

6) Simply connect the parallel printer ports.

7) USB Networking Cable
