Question: How do I transfer my old files to my new hard drive?
Ok, so to explain further, I have a dell laptop inspiron b130, I had some work done on it and also I installed the comcast norton virus protection which I think may have caused my next problem…unmountable boot volume blue screen…dell’s solution…give her a new hard drive. It hadn’t occurred to me that my files would be gone, so while the new hard drive “fixed” the issue all of my files and things are on my old hard drive which is in a box, it is not in a computer or anything I just removed the hard drive and replaced it with the new one, I assume my old files and things I want one are on the old hard drive….is there any way I can recover these files? Dell stated that a tech, (an outside tech not one of theirs, they state they don’t do this) can do this for me and they can put it on an external hard drive, which I have purchased,…but I would like to know how I can do it myself and if it sounds to complicated I will take dell’s awesome advice…ugh…lol. thanks in advance

Just get an external enclosure that matches the specs of your old hard drive.
Put the drive in the enclosure and hook it to your computer via USB.

It should come right up in My Computer since it already has an existing partition and file system.

Backing up your data is essential to prevent loss of important files. Get simple step-by-step instructions and information about using online backup services to protect your data and your files in this video from Digital Landing.

www.onlinebackupsreview.com One important feature of SpiderOak’s backup service is that older versions of a file are kept. So if you overwrite your thesis and don’t notice right away, restoring it from one of the many other backup services would give you the overwritten file. Only services which support Version History would give you the complete version, rather than the newest version (the overwritten one). In addition, if you delete a file, it’s moved to your “Deleted Items” folder in SpiderOak, and is only removed if you delete it from there (via the SpiderOak software interface). Like every other backup service, only the changes of the backup set are transmitted during a backup process. However, since SpiderOak runs across multiple computers, they have to go a bit further. Say you have two files on two different machines, which are 50% identical. One machine backs up the entire file, while the other machine only backs up the differences.

Question: Files are hiding on my external hard drive. “Show Hidden Files” doesn’t work. HELP!!! (iTunes problem?)
I use iTunes on a Win. XP laptop. I have a music library that itunes accesses from an external USB hard drive. The preferences in iTunes are set up to store music I rip on that external drive (as MP3′s).

In iTunes, my library shows 13,678 songs, & all of them play. When I access my external drive (thru “my computer”, and go into the iTunes music folder, I can only see 10,000 (or so) songs/files.

I notice the folders seem to be missing after “R” alphabetically – (there are a few folders that begin with “S” – but just a handful).

I have no music in the “compilations” folder or on my laptop’s hard drive.

When I add a folder (w/ the same name as one of the folders that I can’t see on my external drive) the system prompts me that a folder already exists with that name…etc.. It’s like the folders/files are hidden. They’re definitley there – they play. Just can’t see them.

I have gone into “folder options” and selected “Show all folders”. No luck. Any help? Thanks.

Question: How do you restore original Operating System files in Windows XP without deleting your data and applications?
I downloaded Vista Transformation Pack 6.0 because I was sick of the Windows XP UI. Now System Restore does not work. A message comes up when I launch the program saying “System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again.”
I restarted it, doesn’t work. I checked C:\Windows\System32\Restore and launched from there, same message.

Please note I have no backup of original OS files and strangely, when I check My Computer properties, System Restore is turned on, but when I check Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, “System Restore Service” is nowhere to be found!

I want to know how to restore the original XP files from my SP2 CD, if it is possible, without deleting any of my documents and applications.
Also I have tried uninstalling Vista Transformation Pack, which I am almost certain is behind the problem and it reverted me back to XP “Luna” UI fine, but System Restore still wasn’t working.
Please help.

you can boot to the windows disc and run the installation without actually formating the drive….

if you’re not familiar with the repair console, just select install. Then it’ll do a quick scan and find a prior installation of windows. You’re options are to reformat the partiton, install to a different partition, or repair the current installation….just hit “r” for repair mode and you’ll be fine. It will load windows but leave all your programs, settings, and files alone.

For a quicker method you can also try the system file check. In the command prompt type “sfc.exe /scannow” That program will scan your system files and rewrite any that are corrupted. You’ll still need the windows disc handy but it would be a quicker run through.

Question: How can I make my “120GB WD Passport External Hard Drive” a place to keep my files so my Notebook stays new?
I got a Gateway Notebook (MX-3210) that only has 256MB of memory that when I felt was full – had replaced a 1GB. Because I love to take and save pictures from my digital camera and also download and save a lot of music, I felt it is full again. I then bought a 120GB External Hard Drive to ease the problem.. I forget what I had done that resulted to synchronizing my notebook’s file to the External Hard Drive. I noticed that – when I delete a file from the notebook (whick I wished still be there in the Ex H D after deletion), the same file was gone. I wished somebody can tell me what to do so that the files transfered to the External Hard Drive stays even when the same has been deleted from the notebook.. In that case, my notebook’s hard drive would not get full and be working like brandnew. . ! Is that possible???? Thanks in advance for some help. . !

First off the amount of “Memory” has nothing to do with what is on your primary hard drive in your note book. If your hard drive is say 30 GB or 100 GB or on and on and you fill it up (This is drive “C” on most computers) However the larger hard drives in the notebook may be labeled as “C” “E” “F” “G” to make up the large drive capacity of lets say 120GB.

When you install or attach an external hard drive (You stated its a Western Digital External 120 GB Hard drive) when you attach it the computer assigns it a drive letter. If you look in system properties it will show all of your active drives including the external drive which I will assign now for this answer “Drive H” when you want to save video, sounds, music simply when asked where to save place it to that drive only. Not on your “C” drive etc. This way when you delete a file off your primary drive in the lap top it will not delete off the external drive.
