More and more webmasters nowadays do not value the importance of a complete website backup (files and databases). They have left this to chance and good luck which poses a great risk to their online presence.

Can you relate to this? Then read this important article which might save you an arm and a leg later.

Web site backup is the most ignored task of the webmasters simply because it poses no immediate threat to them until something worse happen to their hosting server. Many times, this task is set aside, delayed and even regarded as nuisance to the busy website owner.

They just don’t realize what is at stake here.

So before your website will be wiped out of the internet by unexpected accidents like server breakdowns, harddisk failures, hacking and DDOS attacks among other bad things, let me share with you the 10 Backup E-S-S-E-N-T-I-A-L-S you should not live without online.

EXPECT – Know that your webhosting company (even the biggest and the most boastful out there) may encounter problems and that your diligence to backup up will pay off later on. Online computing has never been so unpredictable that the worse of times will happen when you least expect it. With the proper mindset, you are insuring the continuity of your online endeavour in any eventualities. In short, be ready.

SCHEDULE – Your backup process should not compete with your busy schedules. Create your own backup schedule at the most convenient time for you in the week. If you’re like me, I do this during lunch and dinner times. Sometimes, I have to leave my PC overnight working on the backups. If you can make it not to conflict with your busy schedules, you will be able to keep up with the demands of this job. In short, don’t complicate.

STICK with it – Just do it. Patience is key to your backup tasks. Once you have a schedule, stick with it. You must do this diligently every time it should happen. This is a tough challenge especially to busy people working online. But the sooner you discipline yourself and make backing up your files a habit, the more you will benefit from a worry-free online environment. In short, get a good habit.

EVALUATE – After a while, test your backup files. A good backup can be tested by simply restoring it on another system. Evaluating your backup results from time to time is good way to know that you are keeping what you should keep – a good and working backup. In short, be sure.

NO Complacency – After some time, your backup schedule may slip away and you will tend to forget or intentionally miss it. Don’t succumb to this temptation. If you need to keep your serial number for adobe photoshop, (the one you used the adobe promotion code on to save money) then put it in your website backup also. Man has never been so busy in his lifetime like it is today in this era of the high tech trends, new developments and discoveries. In short, don’t be lazy to backup.

TRASH – Know which files to keep and not to keep. You need to do this to keep your backup process as short and as efficient as possible. It also saves you valuable resources like hard disk space and backup mediums. Backup only what you need. Keep out the trash and dump it. In short, don’t sweat with the trash.

INTUITION – Have faith in your backup results. Believe that what you are doing is for your own good later on. Like vitamins that keep your body healthy, backups keeps your mind away from stress and worries. A good working backup will make you smile even on the worst of times because you are insured by your patience. In short, believe in good results.

AUTOMATE – Look for alternatives to traditional backup process that can make your life simpler. There are several technologies and softwares you can use now to generate the fastest and safest backup files you will need to restore in case of emergency without you lifting a finger. Automation is king in this lazy man’s world. In short, be efficient.

LIBERATE – Free yourself from worries and anxiety of the unexpected. A death sentence that can be prevented will not kill you. So think about what you can do more (like sleeping more at night) than to think about what harm may come. With your own backup systems established, you can retire at night calmly knowing the next day, if you don’t see your websites as you should, you know you can pubish it back within the day even if your webhost cannot recover it for you. In short, relax and enjoy life to the max.

SECURITY – Nothing beats the feeling of being secured. This is the reason why the insurance businesses have flourished over the years. But more importantly, your commitment to backup your files will not only save you from stress, humiliation, frustration, anger and guilt, but also lift your spirit and confidence because you know at the end of the day, your self reliance is well worth it.

And that, my friend, is a great and wonderful feeling.

Question: How do I access a certain drive?
My ‘My Computer’ doesn’t show that my K: drive exists. But when I go to ‘Save As’ in word or something like that it shows my K: drive and lets me save to it. It currently has a flash drive connected and working properly. I need to access it, and I know how to use a cmd prompt if there are any commands for it.

There is one major problem with most computer backup procedures. Usually after a backup is made, all of the information and data stays in the same place as it always was. However, there are many disasters that could befall your data and computer that make it worthwhile to look into online backups as a precautionary measure. Online data backups will allow you to save a copy of your file or files in a hard drive that cannot be destroyed at the same time as your computer. This way, even if you experience theft or a natural disaster such as a fire or flood you will still have your data.

Is it safe?
Many people are a little bit unsure of putting their data online. After all, if the information can be accessed by them from any computer, doesn’t that mean that the data can be accessed by everybody? Yes and no. While it is theoretically possible for a different person to get into your data as it is stored through an online data backup, the chances of this actually happening are slim to none as long as you’re using a reputable service.

You also have the option of doing something on your end to make sure that the data stays secure. If you can get your hands on any backup software that can encrypt the data, then you should do this. Encrypted data cannot be stolen without considerable effort. Just make sure that you remember what program you used to encrypt it in the first place.

Are online backups easy to use?
Yes! Online data backup services generally only require that you upload the files that you want saved. Then, the files are saved for you, and that’s it! As you can imagine, online data backup services are becoming more and more widespread. You should also be able to access your online data backup from anywhere in the world. While I do not recommend using this as your only form of data backup I highly recommend using an online data back solution as part of a holistic approach to data security.

How fast are they?
This is going to depend by and large on the type of internet connection that you have. If you are still going online with a dialup connection, then you should not look into this type of data backup. It will just take far too long to get your backup done, and during that time, you could easily have just put all the files onto DVDs and give them to a friend for safekeeping. If you have a high speed internet connection ñ either cable or DSL, then you’re in luck and this will not be a problem at all. Just log in, get an account, and upload to your heart’s content.

How much space will you have?
This is going to depend on the backup service that you choose in the end. However, most of the spaces available range between about 100MB and several GB of space with most of them offering at least 1GB of storage space to get started with.

Online data backups are going to become an absolute necessity for the smart computer owner. I wouldn’t live without one and use mine every single day at the very least.

Speaking of space, I have a lot more room in my pants and a lot more money in my pocket since i started using nutrisystem coupons.

Question: PS3 and Yellow Dog Linux?
Sony allows for third party Opperating Systems to be installed on the PS3 “Other OS”. This is similare the adding the MOD Chip to the old X-Box and running the Evolution X OS. thus allowing you to copy “Backup” Games to the Hard drive.
My Question, Does Yellow Dog Linux “YDL” allow for Backups to Hard drive? is there software that will runonlinuxand allow this? like Game Copy X?

Answer:

Answer by Cenobia
You cannot access the PS3s RSX chip through Linux. You have none of the graphics power of the PS3 while running a seperate OS, so you cannot play PS3 games through it (and no, no software exists).

Also, each PS3 game can be up to 50gb, so you’d need one hell of an external hard drive to get a decent number of games (I say external because the ps3 only allows a 10gb partition for a seperate OS).

Basically there is no way you are ever going to be able to run backup games. Even if the PS3 is eventually hacked, Sony can just release a patch that bans those consoles from future updates and online play. There is no point in modding your console anymore. You’ll just end up ruining a $ 600 piece of hardware (or at the very least be unable to play online, which is like half the fun).

Question: Can i store xbox 360 games on a flash drive?
I want to copy games from my uncle that he downloaded on xbox live. I hope it works though.

Answer:

Answer by Ahmed
According to Microsoft,
you can use a “compatible” USB flash drive or external USB hard drive to “transfer” XBox 360 save game files.

USB flash drives do NOT appear as “memory” devices to the XBox 360;
they instead appear as “removable drive” (file system storage) devices,
similar to an external USB hard disk drive.

In “Music, Video and Pictures”,
either appears as a “Connected Device” allowing corresponding content playback within DRM restrictions.

So get a XBox 360 512MB or 64MB memory unit,
and only use it to store game/XBL profiles & saves.

Use a compatible inexpensive USB flash drive or compatible external USB hard drive to store or transfer everything else, or to make backups of your XBox memory

Question: I have this Desktop Hard drive but i have a Mac laptop, Will it work?
I have an iomega prestige desktop hard drive with 1 tb of memory. I was wondering if i could treat this hard drive like a portable hard drive. Not as in bring it every where with me, but connect it to my laptop and put some files in and disconnect it. will it work that way, or can it work that way?

Answer:

Answer by Jerry
possibly, but if you don’t have a lot of experience in it, let a more experienced hardware guy do it.

edit: sorry, i don’t think it will work if you are using a MAC because apple doesnt really like people use non-apple authorized hardware.
